Debut of the Jack Daniels Project

It has been a long time coming but thanks to the folks at RustiQue Studios, I've finally had the chance to show the complete Jack Daniels Project the way it was intended. Thank you to Julia Bruk and all those who came out to support the other night.

A Grievous Evil

The next evolution of the painting. Laying the base layer and establishing the scene.

...It's all vanity of wealth and honor. It's a grievous evil under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, and those riches were lost in a bad venture... As he came naked from his mother's womb, he shall go again naked as he came and shall take nothing for his toil...

A New Adventure

I've been working hard and I've been playing hard but I haven't been painting hard. The last couple months have been filled with exciting art shows and competitions as well as busier than usual work weeks. Last month was particularly exciting because I was able to show a few pieces at the Seattle RAW artist semi finals event where I was named "Seattle RAW artist of the year"! Very exciting.

With all this going on, I haven't been painting as regularly as I'd like, however, that isnt to say that I haven't been thinking about my next painting endeavor. Today I began this new grand adventure and for all of the faithful, I will give you a small preview of my upcoming series. Above is the preliminary sketch for my next painting.

Rebirth

After a few years of working on the Jack Daniels Project, I can finally say that it is complete. I began this series in 2008 originally intending that it would consist of only four paintings. Though, through the course of painting the Project, I realized that the story was not finished and that there was more to tell. I ended up adding two additional pieces to the series and can now say with confidence, it is finished. This series means a great deal to me and I hope that in turn, it will mean something to you.

The final painting in the Jack Daniels Project is titled "Rebirth". Enjoy!

Oil on Canvas, 42"x64"

Total Depravity

Five months now I've been working on this piece and it's been a very interesting journey. I've had times when I've loved working on this piece but for the majority of the time, I've hated the thought of bringing a paintbrush to it. I didn't produce a sweet video with this one like "The Separation" cause half the time I was yelling at the canvas instead of painting on it.  However, even though my work ethic was lacking I've finally finished and I'm extremely pleased with the outcome. This is now the fourth painting in my Jack Daniels Project and I would say that it is the pinnacle of the story thus far. I've named it "Total Depravity".

Where is the time?

It's about time I finally post an update!  It feels like a year since I last shared the progress of the fourth Jack Daniels Painting. The painting has been quite the struggle to work on due to the absence of time. Regardless, I'm determined to make some great progress on this painting through the next couple weeks and hope to have it nearly finished before the end of the month.

The last few days my focus has been to finish up the darkest darks along with the shadow areas and then move into the background of the composition.  Now that I've completed those areas, I'll be shifting my attention to the figure itself and finish up painting the most important subject matter, the Jack Daniels Bottle.

The Darkness Prevails

So it's not the best photos of my paintings that I've ever taken, but with only a few seconds to take a quick snap shot with my iPhone, it'll have to do.  I figured I could post a quick update to the Jack Daniels Project on my lunch break before heading off tomorrow to teach an art camp.

I took a break on the forth painting in the series to work on a commission painting of Gas Works Park and yesterday was my first day back on the project.  For having only an hour to work on it before heading to my real world job, I was able to put down most of the dark tones in the composition.  My goal was to get as much of the bare canvas covered as possible so I could build up the layers when I have more time. And with that came success...

Until next time.
